Third Gender Inclusion Nepal Politics: Kathmandu Party Leadership
20th April 2025, Kathmandu
MayaKo Pahichan Nepal warmly congratulates the Janata Samajbadi Party (JaSaPa) Nepal for making history by electing two Third Gender leaders—Samjhana KC as Vice President and Rajiv Maharjan (Mauni) as Joint Secretary—into its newly restructured Kathmandu District Committee.
Third Gender Inclusion Nepal Politics
This marks the first time in Nepal’s political history that individuals openly identifying as Third Gender have been elected to district-level leadership positions within a political party’s official structure.
This milestone is a powerful affirmation of Nepal’s ongoing progress toward inclusive democracy. It highlights the increasing recognition of the rights, visibility, and leadership of gender and sexual minority (GSM/LGBTI) individuals within mainstream politics.
As the first openly gay Member of Parliament in Asia and the Executive Director of MayaKo Pahichan Nepal, I, Sunil Babu Pant, extend my heartfelt congratulations to Samjhana KC, Rajiv Maharjan (Mauni), and the entire Kathmandu District Committee of JaSaPa Nepal.
I also commend the visionary leadership of outgoing District Chair Vikram Paudel, whose commitment to inclusion was previously demonstrated through the nomination of GSM/LGBTI candidates during last year’s local by-elections.
This inspiring development is a testament to political courage and progressive thinking—qualities essential for a thriving, inclusive democracy. It brings hope to thousands of GSM/LGBTI individuals across Nepal who have long been sidelined in political decision-making.
MayaKo Pahichan Nepal remains steadfast in its commitment to working with all democratic political forces in Nepal to promote the meaningful participation of GSM/LGBTI communities. We will continue advocating for representation from the grassroots to the federal level so that governance in Nepal truly reflects its diverse population.
We believe that inclusive politics fosters inclusive policies, and inclusive policies are the foundation of a just, equitable, and compassionate Nepal.
