Transforming Nepal’s Agriculture: FNCCI’s Plan For Growth & Self-Sufficiency
23rd March 2025, Kathmandu
Nepal’s Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) President, Chandra Prasad Dhakal, has emphasized the modernization and commercialization of subsistence agriculture to maximize benefits from the sector.
Transforming Nepal’s Agriculture
Speaking at the 9th Annual General Meeting of the Nepal Agricultural and Machinery Business Association, he highlighted that Nepal has immense agricultural potential but has failed to capitalize on it effectively.
Agriculture Mechanization for Increased Productivity
President Dhakal stressed that enhancing agricultural production and productivity requires mechanization, modernization, and commercialization. He pointed out that Nepal’s geographical diversity, climatic variations, and abundant natural resources offer vast opportunities in agriculture. If commercialized properly, the sector can create employment for millions of people and help Nepal achieve self-sufficiency in agricultural production, contributing significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Government Support and Investment in Agriculture
Expressing concern over the neglect of agriculture, President Dhakal urged the government to prioritize the sector in the upcoming budget and implement practical policies. He reaffirmed FNCCI’s commitment to collaborating with the government through its Agricultural Enterprise Center and coordinating efforts with 124 district and municipal chambers across all 77 districts of Nepal.
Efficient Utilization of Agricultural Subsidies
Speaking at the event, FNCCI Senior Vice President Anjan Shrestha highlighted the misuse of agricultural subsidies and emphasized the need for a well-structured subsidy system. He advocated for state investment in technology-driven agricultural production and marketing while ensuring the timely availability of essential farming inputs such as fertilizers, seeds, and modern technology.
Government’s Focus on Agricultural Mechanization
Inaugurating the Annual General Meeting, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development Ramnath Adhikari acknowledged the crucial role of private sector businesses in promoting agricultural mechanization. He encouraged local entrepreneurs to focus on producing agricultural machinery within Nepal.
The minister also assured that the government is actively working to reduce production costs, enhance productivity, and ensure a sustainable agricultural system by prioritizing mechanization in agriculture.
Conclusion
The modernization and commercialization of agriculture are crucial for Nepal’s economic growth and employment generation. Government support, private sector involvement, and technology adoption are key factors in transforming Nepal’s subsistence agriculture into a profitable and self-sustaining industry.
