UNESCO-Huawei

In a historic development, Egypt’s Ministry of Education unveiled the National Distance Learning Centre for the Continuous Professional Development of Educators as part of the UNESCO-Huawei Technology-enabled Open Schools for All (TeOSS) project.

This initiative, which runs from 2020 to 2023 in Egypt, Ghana, and Ethiopia, aims to enhance education and digital skills for teachers and students while ensuring inclusive and equitable access to quality education.

Egypt’s Minister of Education and Technical Education, Dr. Reda Hegazy, expressed his gratitude to UNESCO and Huawei for their partnership in the Open Schools Project, which has yielded significant achievements in the education sector. The TeOSS project has focused on capacity building, enrichment training courses, and the creation of digital platforms and the National Center for Distance Education, all aimed at improving educator skills in Egypt.

UNESCO-Huawei TeOSS Project

The UNESCO-Huawei TeOSS project, implemented in collaboration with the Ministries of Education in Egypt, Ethiopia, and Ghana, has successfully piloted and tested digital education platforms, provided essential digital skills training for teachers and students, developed policy frameworks for digital education, and evaluated the project’s effectiveness. This collaborative effort sets the stage for expanding TeOSS to more nations in Africa.

In Egypt, 300 teachers have received training in digital skills through the project, and the new learning center is set to empower 950,000 K-12 educators in underserved communities with enhanced distance learning and digital literacy capabilities.

Sobhi Tawil, Director of the Future of Learning and Innovation Team at UNESCO, praised the Ministry of Education’s role in supporting future horizons through the UNESCO-Huawei partnership. He emphasized the impact of the project in enhancing the quality of education, ensuring access, and driving digital transformation in Egypt and other participating nations.

The TeOSS project’s unique approach blends online and offline learning to maximize education outcomes and guarantee learning continuity, even in crisis conditions. This endeavor is especially crucial as more than 616 million students worldwide were still affected by partial or full school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic as of January 2022.

TECH4ALL Digital Inclusion

Huawei’s involvement in the TeOSS project is aligned with its TECH4ALL digital inclusion and sustainability initiative, which aims to help achieve UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 by improving digital skills for educators and fostering inclusivity and sustainability in the digital world.

Joyce Liu, Director of the TECH4ALL Digital Inclusion Program Office for Huawei, emphasized the significance of education for all and the company’s commitment to building a more inclusive and sustainable digital world through improved digital skills.

This groundbreaking initiative, unveiled at the UNESCO-Huawei International Forum on Digital Platforms and Competencies for Teachers, signifies a giant leap in digital education and highlights the commitment of all stakeholders to ensure access to quality education, even in challenging circumstances.
