US Pledges Additional 31 Million USD for BhoteKoshi Flood Relief and Reconstruction

The United States government has announced an additional financial assistance package of 31 million USD (approximately 4.74 billion Nepalese rupees at current exchange rates) to support rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts following the BhoteKoshi floods in Nepal.

The contribution brings total US aid pledged for flood relief, rescue, and rehabilitation initiatives in the affected region to 36 million USD.

Breakdown of Assistance and Procurement Frameworks
The funding package released through the US Department of State spokesperson’s office specifies targeted allocations for infrastructure, sanitation, and search-and-rescue operations.
- Critical Infrastructure Reconstruction: 10 million USD is earmarked for constructing permanent bridge structures to restore transportation links.
- Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH): 80 million USD (8 million USD) is allocated toward clean water supply, sanitation facilities, and hygiene support in affected communities.
- Rescue and Relief Technology: 13 million USD is designated for specialized drone equipment designed to enhance disaster response, rescue operations, and relief logistics.
- Procurement Directives: The specialized drone systems, bridge components, and associated heavy equipment will be manufactured and supplied by US companies.
Bilateral Engagement and Diplomatic Sympathies
The aid announcement coincided with high-level diplomatic discussions held in New York between US and Nepalese officials.
- Diplomatic Meeting: US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker met with Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal to discuss disaster recovery and bilateral cooperation.
- Expressions of Condolences: Under Secretary Hooker conveyed deep sympathies to all affected populations in Nepal and expressed solidarity with families of approximately 70 US citizens who remain unaccounted for following the natural disaster.
