A digital signature is a unique digital certificate identifying code that is used to authenticate the digital formatted data and information.

Before the implementation of digital signature Nepal does not has any digital authentications method for the verification of digital data, is it genuine or not.it means no legalization of the digital document. Now initiation of digital signature Nepalese government business organization and the general public can feel secure and confident to utilize and implement electronic services.

There are many legal issues that are remaining for remind and modification for the smooth implementation without misuses of the infrastructure. The Office of the Controller of Certification (OCC) had started the works related it under the Electronic Transactions Act 2006 and Rules 2007 with an objective to make electronic transactions reliable and safe

Technically Digital signature is provided to each user in some hard copy token based device which is protected using a password and other protection mechanisms. This device is used as the medium for accessing the system. Beside hard token-based system, there may be the implementation of another soft copy medium also.

All the business organization and parties should obtain their unique digital ID for legal purpose in business. The implementation of the digital signature makes electronic transaction safe easier and provides its legal recognition. So the application of digital signature is a step ahead in the development of information technology and e-governance.
