Inside the BYD Booth: How China’s EV Leaders United at the Beijing Auto Show 2026
29th April 2026, Kathmandu
At the Beijing Auto Show 2026, one of the most notable industry moments came when several leading figures from China’s automotive and tech ecosystem were seen visiting the BYD booth less as a formality and more as a friendly, open exchange across the country’s rapidly advancing auto industry.

Among them were Yin Tongyue of Chery, He Xiaopeng of XPeng, and Lei Jun of Xiaomi.
What followed was candid and engaging rather than ceremonial.
They didn’t just walk through; they engaged deeply. Doors were opened, interiors explored, and engineering details discussed in real time. BYD teams explained battery integration, platform strategy, and manufacturing scale, while visiting leaders interacted with visible curiosity and technical focus.
The atmosphere reflected shared recognition of how quickly China’s NEV industry has evolved.
There was an ease to the exchange of questions, informal discussions, and technical comparisons, underscoring a broader sense of collective progress rather than guarded distance.
BYD today stands as a global leader in the new energy vehicle (NEV) segment, with dominant positions across electric and plug-in hybrid technologies. The company’s scale, vertical integration, and battery innovation have positioned it at the forefront of the global EV transition.
In Nepal as well, BYD has emerged as the leading brand in the four-wheeler passenger EV segment, helping drive early market adoption and confidence in electric mobility infrastructure.
In a related perspective shared from the Nepal market, when asked about this moment, Sameer Shrestha, Head of Branding and PR at CIMEX Inc. (authorised distributor of BYD in Nepal), reflected on a recent speech by Wang Chuanfu at an APAC dealer conference.
He noted:
“A new phase in the Chinese automotive industry is coming. NEV adoption in China has now crossed 50%, and Chinese automakers will continue to push for higher penetration. This shift will not remain domestic; its effects will be felt across global markets as well.”
The comment highlights a structural transition underway in the industry, where China’s NEV momentum is increasingly shaping global automotive direction.
A Symbolic Exchange Beyond Competition
In a related and widely noted moment, Lei Jun presented Wang Chuanfu with a T-shirt carrying the phrase:
“Together, we are Chinese Autos.”
The gesture referenced a sentiment Wang had previously expressed when BYD delivered its 5 millionth NEV, emphasizing collective strength among Chinese automakers as they expand globally.
No formal declarations followed. No alliances were announced. Instead, the show was defined by a series of informal but meaningful exchanges between industry leaders, highlighting both competition and a shared trajectory.
And that, more than any single product reveal, became one of the defining impressions of the show.
