In a major move to protect students planning to study abroad, the Kathmandu Valley Police have cracked down heavily on unauthorized educational consultancies operating in the capital.

Authorities have officially filed legal cases against 32 education consultancies after discovering they were running completely without proper legal permission or registration.
Furthermore, police officials confirmed that the crackdown is far from over, as 37 additional consultancies remain under active investigation.
This strict regulatory action follows a surge in complaints regarding misleading services, financial exploitation, and students being left stranded abroad due to unauthorized firms bypassing mandatory legal channels.
Operating in the Shadows: Why Police Intervened
According to law enforcement authorities, the 32 consultancies facing legal charges failed to complete the mandatory registration processes required by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, as well as the Company Registrar’s Office.
Operating without these valid licenses raises severe concerns about the quality, legitimacy, and safety of the guidance being offered to hopeful students and their families. Many of these unauthorized firms have been accused of:
-
Providing unapproved test preparation and language classes.
-
Misleading families with false promises of “guaranteed visas” and credit transfers.
-
Illegally withholding student passports and charging exorbitant service fees.
Safeguarding the Future of Nepali Students
The intense checks come at a time when the government is tightening its grip on the educational sector. Authorities noted that weak monitoring in the past allowed thousands of unregistered firms to open across the country, heavily risking the financial security and academic future of young students.
“We want to ensure that no student falls into the trap of unapproved or misleading services,” a police official involved in the monitoring stated.
By filing these cases, authorities aim to send a strong message to fraudulent operators using the guise of educational counseling to run illegal recruitment or unauthorized student migration rings.
Students and parents are strongly advised by law enforcement to thoroughly verify a consultancy’s registration status with the Ministry of Education before submitting any payments or sensitive documents like passports.
