NTA Chairperson Arjun Ghimire Takes Office: Key Priorities For Nepal’s Telecom Sector

In a significant regulatory shift, the Government of Nepal has officially appointed Arjun Ghimire to lead the country’s telecom regulatory body.

The decision was finalized during a Cabinet meeting held on July 8 (Asar 24), positioning NTA Chairperson Arjun Ghimire at the forefront of driving digital infrastructure and policy reforms.
Following his appointment, the newly minted NTA Chairperson, Arjun Ghimire, received his official appointment letter from the Minister for Information and Communications, Dr. Bikram Timilsina. He was also sworn into office, taking the oath of office and secrecy on the same day to officially assume his responsibilities.
A Competitive Selection Process
During the ceremony, Communications Minister Dr. Timilsina highlighted the high expectations placed on the new leadership. He noted that NTA Chairperson Arjun Ghimire was selected through a rigorous, competitive, and merit-based process.
The government’s recommendation committee chose Ghimire based on his capability to handle regulatory responsibilities in a just, impartial, and result-oriented manner. Minister Timilsina emphasized that regulatory bodies must take their oversight roles seriously to maintain industry integrity.
Strategic Directives for the New NTA Leadership
As NTA Chairperson Arjun Ghimire takes the helm, the Ministry of Information and Communications has laid out a clear roadmap for the authority. Minister Timilsina urged the new chairperson to focus on several critical areas to reform Nepal’s telecommunications landscape:
Resolving Industry Challenges: Immediate focus on addressing ongoing infrastructural and financial issues within Nepal’s telecom sector.
Impartial Governance: Executing legal responsibilities transparently, ensuring fair competition among service providers without abusing regulatory authority.
Public-Centric Service: Prioritizing consumer interests and strictly monitoring the quality of telecom services across the country.
Structured Action Plans: Formulating and executing distinct short-term, medium-term, and long-term strategic plans to advance Nepal’s digital ecosystem.
With NTA Chairperson Arjun Ghimire now leading the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, consumers and industry stakeholders are anticipating stricter quality controls, faster 5G expansion, and robust reforms to improve network reliability nationwide.
