Ford Nepal ComeBack With New Models & Strategy Announced by GO Automobiles

American automotive giant Ford is preparing to make a strong comeback in the Nepalese market next year, introducing new vehicle models and a renewed business strategy.

In an exclusive interaction with Mina Aryal, Chief Editor of ICT FRAME Magazine, Akash Golchha, Managing Director of GO Automobiles (the official distributor of Ford in Nepal), shared key insights into the brand’s future roadmap, pricing challenges, and market expansion plans.

Speaking about the ongoing NAIMA Mobility Expo, Golchha confirmed that while Ford’s new models were absent from this year’s edition, the iconic American brand will return in full force next year with an expanded portfolio.

Shift in Business Operations Post-2021

According to Golchha, Ford’s business landscape in Nepal underwent a dramatic transformation following the closure of Ford India’s manufacturing plant on September 9, 2021.

Historically, around 95% of Ford vehicles sold in Nepal were compact, entry-level models imported directly from India (such as the Figo, Aspire, and EcoSport), priced below NPR 30 Lakhs (3 million). However, following the shutdown of Indian manufacturing facilities, vehicle sourcing shifted entirely to Ford’s regional plant in Thailand.

Current Portfolio & Impact of EURO-6 Standards

Currently, Ford’s local lineup in Nepal is restricted exclusively to premium high-end models, including the Ford Ranger, Ford Everest, and Ford Raptor. Pricing for these imported units ranges from NPR 1.40 Crore to NPR 2.70 Crore.

Golchha explained that strict EURO-6 emission standards implemented in Nepal further limited the available model variants.

“Currently, we do not have any vehicle priced under 1 Crore Rupees in our portfolio,” Golchha stated. He added that while there is strong enthusiasm among local car enthusiasts for luxury icons like the Ford Mustang, importing it to Nepal would push its landed market price close to NPR 5 Crore, making it commercially unviable at present.

Technical Challenges Behind Global Models (Mach-E, Bronco, F-150)

Nepalese automotive buyers frequently inquire about globally acclaimed Ford models such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E (EV), Ford Bronco, and the Ford F-150 pickup. However, Golchha highlighted several technical and operational barriers preventing their immediate launch:

Drive-Hand Configuration: Many popular North American models are primarily manufactured for Left-Hand Drive (LHD) markets and are not available in Right-Hand Drive (RHD) formats required for Nepal.

Regional Support & Spare Parts: Ford’s regional center in Thailand must formally certify spare parts support, diagnostic equipment, and technical backup before authorizing official distribution in South Asia.

“We strictly avoid introducing vehicles if we cannot guarantee high-quality after-sales service and long-term spare parts support to our customers. Selling a vehicle without solid service backing is not an option for us,” Golchha emphasized.

The Road Ahead: 2027 and Strategic Expansion

The future outlook for Ford in Nepal remains highly positive. Starting in 2027, Ford plans to roll out brand-new global models, opening up import avenues from manufacturing hubs beyond Thailand. This strategy will enable GO Automobiles to bring a more diverse range of RHD vehicles suitable for Nepal’s varied terrain and buyer budgets.

“By next year, new models tailored for Nepal will be added to our lineup, expanding both our sales options and market share,” Golchha affirmed.

He expressed a 99% confidence level that Ford will participate with its complete, updated lineup at next year’s NAIMA Mobility Expo. Currently, GO Automobiles is focusing its showcase at the ongoing auto show on new electric vehicle models from the MG Motor brand.
