Monsoon System Active in Central Nepal: High Flood Risk in Kathmandu Valley, Terai, and Hilly Regions
4th October 2025, Kathmandu
The monsoon system has become highly active in Nepal’s central region since Friday night, increasing the risk of floods and landslides across several provinces, including Bagmati, Madhesh, Gandaki, and Koshi.
Monsoon System Active Central Nepal
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), the system is gradually moving eastward and is expected to remain active until Sunday, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall in many areas.
Heavy Rainfall Predicted Across Provinces
Senior Hydrologist Binod Parajuli, from the Flood Forecasting Division, stated that rainfall continues in the eastern parts of Bagmati, Madhesh, Gandaki, and Lumbini Provinces, along with Koshi Province’s eastern belt. “This system will stay active until tomorrow, and the rain is likely to intensify, especially during the evening and night,” he told Nepal News Bank.
The department has warned of sudden increases in water flow in rivers, streams, and tributaries, which could lead to flash floods and landslides in hilly and mountainous regions.
Districts Under High Flood Alert
The Kathmandu Valley and surrounding districts Dhading, Rasuwa, Kavrepalanchok, Sindhupalchok, Dolakha, Sindhuli, Makwanpur, Chitwan, and Gorkha are listed as high-risk flood zones.
Similarly, in the Terai region, the districts of Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Sarlahi, and Mahottari are also under high alert due to rising river levels.
Parajuli cautioned that, “Many rivers are already nearing danger levels. Residents living near riverbanks and flood-prone areas are strongly advised to remain alert and adopt safety measures.”
Authorities Urge Vigilance
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has requested the general public, local governments, and disaster management authorities to stay vigilant and prepared for potential floods, landslides, and inundation incidents.
The department also confirmed that the monsoon system will remain active until Sunday (Poush 5), maintaining the current level of risk across central and eastern Nepal.
