Apple may begin selling its iPhone as part of a subscription service in which users pay a monthly app charge to own their devices rather than traditionally purchasing them.

Apple is allegedly developing a new subscription service via which it will sell the iPhone and other hardware items, in what may be the company’s most significant push towards subscription-driven sales.

Simply said, Apple would offer its iPhone as part of a subscription service in which users would pay a monthly app charge to acquire their device rather than purchasing it traditionally.

According to Bloomberg, Apple’s hardware subscription service is still in the works, but it may come as early as later this year.

Subscriptions would most likely be controlled via a user’s Apple account on their device, the App Store, and the company’s website. It would very certainly be an option in Apple’s online shop and actual retail locations as well. Apple accounts are frequently linked to a user’s credit or debit card.

Apple would not be the first company to promote hardware subscriptions. Peloton Interactive Inc. has just begun testing a subscription service that allows customers to lease bikes and training content for $60 to $100 per month. Google has taken a similar strategy with its Chromebook computers, which are aimed at corporate clients.

And, in the past, Apple has provided many payment plans to spread out the cost of products, but not with a 0% interest rate.

How will it operate?

The subscription plan, which is presently under development, would not be an installment system in which the consumer pays for the iPhone over a period of 12 to 24 months. However, with this service, you will be subscribing to hardware, which means you will be able to upgrade to new products as they become available for a fee based on the product you select.

The service would operate on a yet-to-be-determined monthly cost based on the product selected by the consumer.

According to sources, the hardware subscription would include the cost of the iPhone as well as a charge that will allow you to upgrade to a newer model whenever it is introduced without having to pay the whole price all at once.

However, because the specifics are not clear, we could assume that Apple is possibly thinking of giving customers the flexibility to own an iPhone alongside its popular software services without having to pay for them individually.

Of course, the subscription fee for the entire bundle could be higher than what Apple charges for Apple One currently.
