British startup Newbolt has made a significant breakthrough in electric vehicle (EV) battery technology, achieving an 80% charge in just 4 minutes and 37 seconds.
British Startup Newbolt Achieves 80% EV Battery Charge
This rapid charging was demonstrated during a test on a specially built sports car at a test track in Bedford.
The Newbolt battery, developed for high-speed charging, was tested under live conditions with an audience of auto industry professionals. The test showed that the battery, which started at 10% charge, reached 80% in under five minutes—significantly outperforming Tesla’s Supercharger, which typically takes 15 to 20 minutes to achieve the same level of charge.
Following the test, the car equipped with Newbolt’s battery was able to drive 120 miles over two days. For comparison, a Tesla with an 80% charge can typically travel up to 200 miles. Newbolt co-founder Dr. Sai Shivareddy expressed satisfaction with the results but noted the challenges faced during the test, including a UK heatwave and technical issues with the cooling system and on-site charger.
Despite these challenges, the test is considered a major step forward in reducing ‘range anxiety’ for EV users and improving charging infrastructure. Dr. Shivareddy emphasized that the ability to charge the battery from 0% to 100% in just 6 minutes represents a major advancement for electrification.
Newbolt has also claimed that its battery technology minimizes charge loss, maintaining 80% capacity even after 4,000 charging cycles. This innovation could be a game-changer in the EV market, offering faster and more efficient charging solutions.
The company’s progress highlights the potential for faster EV charging technology to transform the automotive industry and enhance the overall electric vehicle experience.
