Newport, Britain’s largest chipmaker, is being acquired by a Chinese company.
Newport Wafer Fab, the UK’s largest chip maker, will be acquired by Chinese-owned semiconductor company Nexperia next week for around Rs 87 million.
CNBC reported citing two sources close to the deal.
Nexperia’s, a Dutch firm in which China’s WingTech Technology has invested 100 percent, told CNBC that negotiations were underway on Friday.
NWF’s privately owned chip plant, located in Newport, South Wales, was established in 1982 and is one of the few semiconductor fabricators in the UK.
“Nexperia will announce as many takeovers as possible on Monday or Tuesday,” the source said.
The agreement comes at a time of global chip shortages as countries seek to become more self-sufficient in semiconductor production.
Currently, most chips are manufactured in Asia, with Taiwan’s TSMC, South Korea’s Samsung, and China’s SMIC being the world’s largest chipmakers.
