The Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) has warmly welcomed the Nepal Government’s decision to make the use of domestic products mandatory in public institutions. This policy is expected to significantly promote local production and strengthen Nepal’s industrial sector.
CNI Supports Government’s Initiative
The directive, titled “Directive for the Use of Domestic Products in Public Institutions 2081,” was approved during the Cabinet meeting on Mangsir 28 upon the recommendation of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies. This decision has generated excitement and optimism within CNI and the broader private sector.
In 2021, CNI signed a partnership agreement with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies, initiating the “Make in Nepal–Swadeshi Campaign.” This initiative aims to boost the production, consumption, and export of Nepalese goods and services. The recent government decision reflects strong support for this campaign and reinforces its objectives.
Government Support Encourages Domestic Product Growth
The Confederation expressed confidence that this collaboration with the government would add a new dimension to the production and use of domestic goods. The “Make in Nepal–Swadeshi Campaign” was formally launched in 2020 under the leadership of then-Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Since its inception, the CNI has been advocating for mandatory usage of domestic products in government and public institutions.
The government’s latest directive is a significant step towards achieving the campaign’s goals. It aligns with Nepal’s efforts to reduce dependency on imported goods and foster economic self-reliance.
CNI Urges Full Implementation of the Directive
CNI has requested the government to ensure the full implementation of the “Directive for the Use of Domestic Products in Public Institutions 2081.” To support this effort, CNI has already launched a Business-to-Business (B2B) portal to facilitate networking among local producers and suppliers.
Additionally, the Confederation has joined hands with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) through its “Agora” platform to promote domestic products. CNI has also obtained a collective trademark to strengthen the identity of local goods in domestic and international markets.
Key Objectives of the Make in Nepal–Swadeshi Campaign
- Promoting Domestic Production: Supporting Nepalese industries by encouraging the production of high-quality local goods.
- Boosting Consumption: Increasing the consumption of domestic products in both public and private sectors.
- Enhancing Exports: Facilitating the export of Nepalese goods to international markets.
- Government Partnership: Building a strong partnership with the government to ensure policy-level support.
CNI believes that this directive will play a critical role in achieving these objectives, ultimately contributing to Nepal’s economic growth and self-sufficiency.
The Confederation has expressed its commitment to providing policy suggestions and implementing initiatives to ensure the success of the “Make in Nepal–Swadeshi Campaign.”
