In a significant boost to Nepal’s agricultural export sector, the Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) has expanded its international footprint by dispatching a fresh consignment of dairy products to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Timed specifically for the major Nepalese festive season of Dashain and Tihar, the latest shipment includes 1,500 kilograms of clarified butter (ghee), 150 kilograms of Himalayan yak cheese, and traditional peda.
This expansion follows a highly successful trial run in which an initial 1,500 kg batch of DDC ghee received overwhelming positive feedback from consumers in the Gulf region.

Strategic Vision: Dubai as the Gateway to West Asian Markets
Speaking on the initiative, Prakash Chandra Ghimire, Managing Director of Rato ra Chandra-Surya International—the firm facilitating the export of indigenous Nepali products for over two years emphasized the growing demand for authentic Nepali food items abroad.
“The ghee sent previously performed remarkably well in the market. As demand surged, we added 150 kg of Himalayan yak cheese, peda, and additional ghee this time. Our objective is to introduce rich Nepali products to both non-resident Nepalis and local consumers abroad. With Dubai acting as our primary gateway, we aim to expand into broader West Asian markets in the near future.”
While DDC had previously exported ghee to nations like Japan, past efforts lacked long-term continuity. This new initiative marks a shift toward a structured, sustainable export model.
Quality Upgrades and Localization for International Markets
To meet international retail standards and appeal to a broader demographic in the Middle East, DDC has introduced significant product packaging enhancements:
Glass Jar Packaging: Replacing standard packaging with eco-friendly glass containers to preserve flavor, purity, and shelf life.
Trilingual Labeling: Including Arabic alongside Nepali and English to comply with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) consumer guidelines and inform local buyers.
Dr. Sharan Kumar Pandey, General Manager of DDC, expressed confidence in the sustainability of the export strategy:
“While earlier limited shipments were experimental, this increased volume proves the commercial viability of our dairy products abroad. To ensure a continuous and reliable supply chain for export markets, DDC is actively scaling up raw milk collection and processing capabilities across Nepal.”
Conclusion: Boosting Nepal’s Dairy Economy Abroad
The successful export of DDC’s premium ghee and Himalayan yak cheese to Dubai represents a milestone for Nepal’s dairy industry. By pairing high-quality local produce with international packaging standards, DDC and its trade partners are laying the groundwork for a sustained economic presence across the Middle East.
