Gold and Silver Prices Rise in Nepali Market as Bankers and Bullion Traders Hold Joint Consultation

Gold and silver prices in the domestic market recorded an upward trend on Ashwin 14, 2083 BS (Wednesday).
Gold and Silver Prices Rise
According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, fine gold increased by NPR 2,800 per tola to reach NPR 293,300 per tola, up from NPR 290,500 recorded on the previous day. Similarly, silver prices increased by NPR 30 per tola to settle at NPR 4,425 per tola compared to NPR 4,395 per tola on Tuesday.
Bankers and Bullion Traders Discuss Import and Distribution Directives
An interaction program titled “Bank-Trader Interaction on Implementation of Gold and Silver Import and Distribution” was held at the secretariat premises in Bougainville, Kathmandu under the chairmanship of Kishan Sunar, President of the Nepal Gold, Silver, Gem and Jewellery Federation. The program addressed procedural challenges and operational issues faced by commercial banks and bullion traders under the regulatory directives issued by Nepal Rastra Bank.

Program proceedings were welcomed and facilitated by Federation Secretary Keshab Bahadur Bishwakarma, with participants including representatives from Nepal Rastra Bank, the Chief Executive Officer of Nepal Bankers’ Association, federation office bearers, associate members, and heads of bullion departments at commercial banks.
Trader Concerns:
Traders highlighted difficulties regarding bank procurement procedures, documentation requirements, payment mechanisms, increasing rates of customer jewelry returns, and market sluggishness caused by customs duty fluctuations and price volatility.
Regulatory and Banking Response:
Yagya Shrestha, Deputy Director at the Policy Unit of the Foreign Exchange Management Department of Nepal Rastra Bank, along with Anil Sharma, CEO of the Nepal Bankers’ Association, clarified existing procedural norms and committed to presenting trader feedback to relevant authorities to improve coordination.
Policy Recommendation on Customs Duty:
The meeting concluded with a consensus to advocate with the Government of Nepal to revise custom duties and tax rates on precious metals to competitive levels aligned with neighboring markets to stimulate domestic trade and market activity.
