Google IO virtual event

Google’s annual developer conference was held on Tuesday as it was canceled last year due to the pandemic. Google IO returned as a virtual event. The conference was held for three days. Google executives and project managers showed off the new software features, new AI-powered tools, and a zany prototype video booth made for hyperrealistic teleconferencing.

Video Calls

The vast development of technology has made our life so easy and convenient. Mostly in this time as Corona has created a devasting scenario which brings fear of going out and people are only connected via the Internet. Video calls are the best medium that brings happiness to people. If the person is very curious and eagerly waiting for the next one to meet, and if they can’t meet and see in real, video calls are the best option but imagine a video call where the person on the other side of the screen feels real as if they are really present in front of you.

A Futuristic 3D Video Calling Booth

Recently, at the event of Google IO event, Google has shown a glimpse of its project Starline at the I/O conference held on Tuesday. With Starline’s futuristic technology, video calls take on a whole new meaning as they would show each party as a dedicated 3D hologram. A 3D video call is a future, as seen in Google’s project Starline. 3D real-life version of themselves and yourself in a video call, instead of the flat two-dimension look we are used to.

Google’s Project Starline is the latest attempt at converting into a 3D Hologram of themselves, although big tech companies were pitching for that frequently. Several years ago, the company kicked off a project to use technology to explore what’s possible. They called it Project Starline. It builds on the different areas of computer science. Mainly it relies on custom-built hardware and highly specialized equipment. According to Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, it is early, and it is currently available in a few of their offices.

Google uses “research in computer vision, machine learning, spatial audio, and real-time compression to make these 3D Holograms possible. Also, it has developed a breakthrough light fields display system that creates a sense of volume and depth that can be experienced without the need for additional glasses or headsets. The system relies on a 3D image of the user, which is then compressed in real-time and then sent to a 3D display to give the effect that the person is really sitting opposite you.

Key facts

Our regular smartphone and laptop displays won’t support this 3D effect, and for Project Starline to succeed. The special equipment will be needed for functioning. They are packed with sensors and cameras.
