Google has begun internal testing for its new “AI Mode” in Search, which could be launched soon. This feature aims to improve how users interact with Google Search by providing a more dynamic, AI-driven experience.
Google Search AI Mode
According to 9to5Google, the feature allows users to ask more complex and open-ended questions. It offers a full-screen interface and provides detailed, conversational-style answers. AI Mode will also display related URLs, helping users explore the topic further.
Google employees are currently testing this new feature. A screenshot shared by 9to5Google reveals that AI Mode will present answers to questions in a way that resembles a conversation with the Gemini AI chatbot. This model will be able to handle intricate questions and give users comprehensive responses.
Powered by Gemini 2.0
AI Mode runs on a customized version of Google’s Gemini 2.0, a model known for its advanced reasoning and thinking abilities. This technology allows the AI to break down complex queries and offer logically sound answers. Google’s internal email mentions that the feature will help users make better decisions and compare various options.
Users can ask questions like “How much food do I need to prepare for a family gathering?” or “What tools do I need to start a DIY project?” The AI will deliver detailed responses and suggestions.
Easy Access and User Feedback
When users activate AI Mode, they will be presented with a full-screen interface showing the answer. Along with the response, AI Mode will include links to external sources that help clarify the answer. Users can also ask follow-up questions via a text field.
The feature will also have a feedback system, where users can rate the answers with thumbs-up or thumbs-down icons. On mobile, users will be able to ask questions through voice commands, thanks to microphone support.
A New Era for Google Search
The new AI-powered mode is expected to significantly enhance the search experience. It will be integrated with other search filters such as images, shopping, and news. Google aims to make AI Mode especially useful for more in-depth and exploratory searches that go beyond typical quick queries.
While this new feature could potentially shift how users interact with search results, it may also reduce traffic to websites. As AI Mode takes up more space on search result pages, fewer people may click on individual links. This could raise concerns among publishers.
AI Mode’s Potential Future
Google has not yet announced when AI Mode will be widely available. However, internal testing suggests that the feature could be launched shortly. The integration of Gemini 2.0 into Google Search is part of a broader push to embed more AI-driven features across various Google platforms.
