The Hult Prize is the world’s largest student competition and start-up platform for social good. In partnership with former U.S. President Bill Clinton, this innovative crowdsourcing platform identifies and launches disruptive and catalytic social ventures that aim to solve the planet’s most pressing challenges. Every year, student teams compete from all around the world for a chance to secure US$ 1 million in start-up funding to launch a sustainable social venture. The theme of the Hult Prize 2019 has been announced as “For Us, By Us: Solving Global Youth Unemployment”.

Celebrating the 10 years of its commencement, Ahmad Ashkar, CEO and Founder of the Hult Prize, attributes the success of the competition to the shift in the global economy and the millennial generation’s refusal to live in a world with inequality. “They are giving entrepreneurs from around the world a platform to innovate and revolutionize the way They think about servicing the disadvantaged,” Ashkar commented.

The on-campus event Hult Prize @ IOE, Pulchowk Campus is the quarter-final stage of the competition from which the winning team will be fast-tracked to compete at one of the 16 Hult Prize Regional Finals around the world, bypassing the general application round which annually receives over 20,000 applicants from more than 350 colleges and universities in over 150 countries. Students studying the technical streams offered by the Tribhuvan University are eligible to compete in the event where they will be required to pitch their start-up ideas in front of a panel of judges to earn their spot at the regional finals.

The Hult Prize Regional Finals will take place in March 2019 in all of the regional locations. Following the regional finals, one winning team from each host city will attend a summer business accelerator, where participants will receive mentorship, advisory and strategic planning as they create prototypes and set-up to launch their new social business.  A final round of competition will take place in September, where one team will be selected as the winner and will be awarded the US$ 1,000,000.

In the words of President Clinton, “The Hult Prize is a wonderful example of the creative cooperation needed to build a world with shared opportunity, shared responsibility, and shared prosperity, and each year they look forward to seeing the many outstanding ideas the competition produces.”
