Instagram said on Tuesday that it is providing auto-generated captions for videos on its app. Previously, video makers had to add subtitles to their videos manually.
Instagram claims that adding captions would make the platform more accessible to deaf or hard-of-hearing users.
Users who prefer to watch videos without sound will benefit from the new functionality. Auto-generated subtitles for videos will be the name of the new feature. TikTok also launched a similar feature in April 2021.
Auto-generated subtitles will be available in 17 languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic, Vietnamese, Italian, German, Turkish, Russian, Thai, Tagalog, Urdu, Malay, Hindi, Indonesian, and Japanese, according to the business. Instagram said more language support would be added shortly.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri tweets that the new feature has been “a long time coming” and that users will be able to turn it on or off.
Instagram emphasizes that the AI behind the captions will improve as it learns.
The auto-generated captions on Instagram are on by default for the creators on Instagram. With this, the creators will consume a lot of time, as they don’t need to add captions now.
If the creator wants to turn off the auto caption, they can do it via Advanced Settings > Accessibility > Show Captions, or Manage Caption in the menu of the video.
The introduction of auto-generated captions comes only one day after Instagram announced the discontinuation of support for its standalone app for IGTV.
Instagram announced as part of the announcement that it would now focus on having all videos on its main app and that it will continue to simplify and improve video in the main Instagram app over the coming months.
Instagram also repeated its commitment on Reels, stating that the feature is still the top driver to engagement growth on the platform and that it intends to continue investing in it.
