International Safer Internet Day 2020 Concludes

The International Safer Internet Day 2020 has been marked with various programs in Nepal. The day is annually marked with the slogan ‘Better internet for unity, aiming to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology among children and youths’.

On the occasion, Kathmandu based Texas College of Management and IT (TCMIT) organized a program on February 11, Tuesday. The programs jointly organized by organizations working in the cybersecurity sector, npCert (Information Security Response Team Nepal) and CSRI Nepal (Center For Cyber Security Research and Innovation), experts facilitated the students on ways to have safe and positive use of the internet.

Speaking at the program, Nepal Telecommunications Authority Deputy Director Roja Kiran Basukala stressed maintaining high alertness while using the internet. She said children are vulnerable to misconduct putting them at high risk. Stating that children have been trapped into an addiction of online games and even witnessed obscene contents on the internet, she opined such activities would increase the risk of cyber-crime.

Similarly, Rishav Pandit specializes on Cyber Security Investigation, informed about the measures for safe use of the internet.

Speaking on the same occasion, Chairperson of Kathmandu Metropolis Word no. 7, Suddha Kumar Dangol said schools, parents and social organizations should spread awareness to children regarding the safe use of the internet.

Likewise, Chairperson of npCert, Chiranjibi Adhikari stressed the need of awareness and orientation to escape threats of cybercrimes. He clarified that the program was organized with the aim of protecting children from online addiction and to strengthen the cybersecurity framework of Nepal.

Head of the IT Department of Texas International Education Network, Suman Thapaliya was of the view that the future risk from cybercrime could be alleviated through timely awareness.
