Kathmandu Metropolitan City Initiates Approval Revocation Process for 92 Private Schools
23rd August 2026, Kathmandu
Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has initiated the process of revoking the permission or approval of 92 institutional (private) schools operating within the metropolitan area.
KMC Initiates Approval Revocation Process
The Education Department of KMC has issued official notices to the concerned schools, granting a 35-day deadline to submit necessary documents, details, and explanations.
Legal Basis and Regulatory Enforcement
Section 36 Compliance: Navaraj Dhakal, Head of the Education Department, stated that circumstances exist under Section 36 of the Education Act, 2075 that warrant cancellation of approval for these institutions.
Consequences of Non-Compliance: If the targeted schools fail to provide a satisfactory response within the 35-day window, the Education Department will proceed with full revocation.
Non-Operational Schools Assessment: The action stems from a Municipal Education Committee decision to conduct field inspections, identify schools that remain registered but are no longer functioning, and remove them from official records.
Ongoing Supervision: KMC continues to regulate private school operations, including grade or subject additions, name and location changes, and ownership transfers in accordance with local governance standards.
