Nepal Launches ‘Nepal e-Verification System’ for Online Consular Document Attestation

In a major step toward digital governance, Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has officially launched the Nepal e-Verification System.

Developed by the Department of Consular Services, this digital platform aims to make the consular attestation process transparent, systematic, hassle-free, and technology-driven.

The system was formally inaugurated by Minister for Foreign Affairs Shishir Khanal during a ceremony held at the Ministry’s hall in Singha Durbar.

Online Application for Official Document Verification

With the launch of the e-Verification platform, service seekers can now submit online applications for the consular attestation of government-issued or verified documents.

Documents eligible for online verification include:

• Academic Certificates (SLC/SEE, +2, Bachelor’s, Master’s)

• Official Recommendation Letters

• Vital Registration & Civil Documents (Birth, Marriage, Citizenship certificates)

• Other official paperwork issued by various Nepali government bodies

How the e-Verification System Solves Long-Standing Challenges

Previously, citizens seeking consular verification had to physically visit the Department of Consular Services in Kathmandu. If a document contained minor errors or missing details, applicants were forced to return to their local government offices outside Kathmandu to fix the issues, incurring heavy travel costs, wasted time, and physical fatigue.

The new system fundamentally changes this workflow:

Submit Online: Applicants upload their documents and submit their applications from anywhere in Nepal.

Online Review: Consular officers review and verify the documents digitally.

Single Visit Upon Approval: Applicants only need to visit the department in person once their online application has been approved.

This streamlined process effectively eliminates long queues, minimizes repeated department visits, and prevents delays caused by minor administrative errors.

Aligning with the ‘Digital Nepal’ Vision

Speaking at the launch event, Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal expressed satisfaction that the first decision he made upon assuming office had come to fruition. He noted that the initiative directly supports the government’s overarching policy of prioritizing “Digital Nepal” and good governance.

“The government has adopted a policy of gradually making public services available digitally, prioritizing the concepts of Digital Nepal and good governance,” said Minister Khanal. “The Nepal e-Verification System is a concrete step toward translating that commitment into practice.”

The Department of Consular Services highlighted that the primary goal of the system is to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in public service delivery.

The system is expected to directly benefit:

• Students pursuing studies abroad

• Migrant workers seeking foreign employment

• Immigrants & Expats relocating internationally

• Citizens requiring document legalisation for foreign embassies and overseas institutions
