About NOSK

Nepal Open Source Klub (NOSK) is a community of like-minded individuals dedicated to raising awareness and adoption of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in Nepal. Founded by Nitesh Rijal on February 28, 2008, originally as the NCIT Open Source Klub, NOSK aims to educate and train people across various technology domains by organizing events and sessions. The club’s objectives include promoting open source culture, helping people adopt FOSS, and providing workshops on diverse open source tools and technologies. NOSK is open to everyone interested in contributing to and educating others about technology that supports FOSS, encouraging active participation through platforms like GitHub.

NOSK is committed to spreading knowledge about the benefits of open source and free software. The club frequently organizes talks and workshops to achieve this goal. Free software emerged from the free software movement initiated in 1983 by Richard M. Stallman with the GNU project, aiming to provide a Unix-like operating system that respects users’ freedoms. Open source, on the other hand, refers to software that is publicly accessible for modification and distribution. While free software focuses on social movement and user freedoms, open source emphasizes a development model that ensures transparent and collaborative software creation. NOSK supports both principles, advocating for the widespread use and understanding of FOSS.
