Nepal Social Media Ban Threat: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp Face Ultimatum
5th February 2025, Kathmandu
Nepal’s Communication Minister, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has issued a stern warning to global social media giants, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Nepal Social Media Ban Threat
These platforms have been told to register with the government or risk being banned in the country. The Minister’s statement came during a speech at Nepal Telecom’s 21st anniversary celebration.
Only TikTok Compliant So Far
Currently, TikTok is the only major platform that has registered with Nepalese authorities. However, popular platforms like Meta (Facebook, Instagram) and WhatsApp have yet to comply. Minister Gurung stressed, “We have made it clear to these companies. If they fail to register, they won’t be allowed to operate in Nepal.”
Regulating Social Media for National Unity
The government’s push to regulate social media comes in response to increasing concerns over harmful content. Minister Gurung cited rising issues with social media platforms that promote hate speech, religious intolerance, and division. The new Social Media Regulation Bill aims to tackle these problems by holding platforms accountable for their content.
“Social media that undermines our national unity and spreads hatred will face legal consequences,” Gurung warned. He emphasized that the government will take strong action against platforms promoting harmful propaganda.
The Need for a Social Media Law
The government’s initiative follows widespread calls from citizens for better control over social media. Gurung explained, “People are demanding regulation because social media is increasingly being misused. We must stop this anarchy.” The bill will give authorities the power to punish those spreading content that harms social harmony or national integrity.
Balancing Free Speech with Responsibility
While the regulation aims to protect Nepal’s democratic values, Gurung emphasized that it is not an attempt to stifle free speech. “We will ensure freedom of expression, but it must not come at the cost of our country’s security and unity,” he added. The Minister made it clear that allowing reckless speech and misinformation under the guise of freedom is unacceptable.
Cybercrime Laws to Follow
In addition to regulating social media, the government is also tackling the rise of cybercrimes. Gurung revealed that a draft for a Cybercrime Control Act is already in the works. This law will address the growing number of cybercrimes that have been draining millions of Nepali citizens.
A Future Without Unregulated Social Media?
The government’s strong stance on social media regulation has sparked debate. Some argue that it could restrict free speech, but others support it as necessary for national security. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether platforms like Facebook and Instagram will comply, or if Nepal will proceed with its ban.
