In the current financial year, the company has successfully operated services using VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) technology in several challenging locations, including Tinker in Darchula, Gosainkund in Rasuwa, and Kimathanka in Sankhuwasabha.
Continuing the process of expanding telecommunication services equally even in places where returns are low and investment is relatively high, in the current financial year, services have been operated through VSAT in places like Tinker in Darchula, Gosainkund in Rasuwa, Kimathanka in Sankhuwasabha.
This initiative is part of the government’s policy to extend the reach of telecommunication services to rural and remote areas, where the return on investment is typically low, but the need for connectivity is high.
Nepal Telecom’s commitment to providing equal access to telecommunication services is evident in its efforts to bring modern communication facilities to these underserved regions.
The recent expansion includes the launch of telephone services in Ranisain, located in the lap of Saipal Himal at the border area of Humla, Bajura, and Bajhang. Since June 9, residents of Ranisain, situated in Ward No. 3 of Namkha Rural Municipality in Humla, have had access to telecommunication services.
This area, previously only accessible through mobile service at lower altitudes, now benefits from advanced VSAT technology.
Sonam Lama, a local resident, described the arduous journey to Ranisain, highlighting the area’s remoteness.
It takes one day by car from Bajura headquarters Martadi, followed by a four-day walk, or a three- to four-hour car ride from Humla headquarters Simkot, followed by a one-day walk.
Before the service was launched, the closest point of telecommunication access was Lampata, about 20 km away.
With the new VSAT service, approximately 600 residents of Ranisain can now easily connect with their relatives.
The area, known for its trekking routes and snow-covered landscape for over six months of the year, will greatly benefit from this technological advancement.
The necessary equipment for the operation of the VSAT service was transported by people from Tanjakot Zimana in Humla to Ranisain over four days.
This effort reflects Nepal Telecom’s dedication to improving connectivity in even the most challenging environments.
