Starting December 16, 2026 (Poush 1, 2083 BS), a National Identity Card (NID/NIN) will be mandatory for all citizens aged 16 and above to enroll in new plans, renew existing policies, or receive healthcare services under the government health insurance program.
Key Objectives of Making National ID Mandatory
- Ensuring accurate identification (KYC) of insured individuals
- Preventing double/duplicate enrollments
- Improving claim processing and management efficiency
Who Needs to Update Details and How?
Who Must Update?
All insured households—including general members and targeted groups (such as senior citizens, ultra-poor individuals, and persons with disabilities)—must update their personal and family details (KYC update).
How to Update Details Step-by-Step
- Access the Portal: Visit the official Health Insurance Board e-Portal at eportal.hib.gov.np.
- Register or Log In: Create a account or log in using the head of the household’s registered mobile number or email address.
- Enter Details: Input family members’ personal information along with their respective National Identity Numbers (NIN) and upload any required supporting documents.
- Verification: Once the submitted details are verified against the National ID database, your KYC record will be updated successfully.
Other Key Digital Initiatives Introduced by the Board
EMR and Digital Claims Integration
Claims submitted digitally via Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems at healthcare facilities will be formally recognized. This eliminates manual claims, paper-based records, and handwritten prescriptions, speeding up reimbursement delays. In the future, this data will feed into an AI/ML-driven claim review system.
- Standardized ICD-11 Codes: To maintain uniformity in disease diagnosis, 2,189 customized ICD-11 codes will be implemented within the IMIS system.
- Strategic Purchasing Taskforce: A taskforce has been formed to study and submit a report within 60 days on selecting health service providers, service categorization, and cost-effective payment methods.
