For the first time in history, Nepal has clinched a prestigious D&AD Yellow Pencil Award, one of the highest accolades in the design and advertising industry. 4
The winning entry, “Nithya Ranjana,” is a font designed by Ek Type, India, in collaboration with Callijatra, Nepal.
Nithya Ranjana Receives D&AD Yellow Pencil Award
The project brought together a talented team of type designers and consultants: Noopur Datye and Tathagata Biswas from Ek Type, with Ananda K. Maharjan serving as the Ranjana Script Consultant.
The client for this innovative work was Murali K. Prahalad, and the entrant company was Ek Type, reflecting a significant cross-border collaboration between India and Nepal.
“Nithya Ranjana” stood out among the competition, being evaluated by more than 600 juries at the D&AD Awards. This recognition highlights the excellence in design and creativity that the project embodies.
The D&AD Awards, established in 1962, celebrate the world’s best in commercial creativity across design, advertising, craft, and production.
Winning a D&AD Pencil is considered a pinnacle achievement, inspiring industry professionals globally.
The Yellow Pencil is awarded to the most outstanding work that achieves true creative excellence.
This award not only marks a monumental achievement for the involved design agencies, Callijatra and Ek Type, but also places Nepal on the global map of design excellence.

About Nithya Ranjana
Nithya Ranjana is a typeface based on the calligraphic style of Ranjana script from Nepal. The typeface supports many unique features of Ranjana script such as character specific matra forms, 750+ stacked conjuncts, stylistic alternates and Kutakshar forms.
Apart from vowels, consonants, conjuncts, numerals, and punctuation marks, the font has 600+ additional forms to correctly and elegantly represent its many unique combinations. Nithya Ranjana strikes a balance between Ranjana’s rich heritage and its contemporary requirements and can be used to write Sanskrit, Pali and Nepal Bhasa.
