NRB Issues Public Notice
The regulatory body highlighted common fraud tactics and key red flags to help consumers protect their personal assets and online banking details.
Common Scam Methods Used By Cybercriminals
Fraudsters frequently utilize fraudulent links, email attachments, unexpected phone calls, text messages, and social media platforms to trick individuals into disclosing sensitive financial credentials.
The central bank advised the public to avoid opening suspicious links or downloading unknown file attachments from unverified origins.
Protecting Confidential Credentials And Avoiding Pressure
Nepal Rastra Bank cautioned account holders against messages or calls designed to create artificial urgency, pressure, or panic to force rapid payment decisions.
The bank emphasized that users must never share confidential banking credentials with anyone, including:
- Usernames
- Account passwords
- Security PINs
- One-time passwords
Recognizing High Risk Offers And Foreign Transfers
The notice warned citizens against requests to send funds to unfamiliar recipient accounts or offers guaranteeing unrealistically high financial returns with minimal risk.
The central bank also advised against unsolicited requests asking individuals to open new bank accounts or share personal details, urging people to thoroughly verify all financial offers before taking action.
Understanding How Financial Scams Occur
Nepal Rastra Bank explained that online financial fraud primarily occurs through three main avenues:
- Manipulating victims into voluntarily authorizing money transfers under false pretenses.
- Stealing private authentication data such as banking usernames, passwords, PIN numbers, or temporary security codes.
- Gaining unauthorized device access using remote desktop applications or screen-sharing tools.
Reporting Mechanisms And Direct Verification Steps
To minimize fraud risks, Nepal Rastra Bank urged consumers to confirm any unusual communication directly with their respective bank or financial institution.
The central bank encourages the public to report fraudulent attempts and suspicious activity through its official online grievance portal and dedicated customer protection channels.
The institution reaffirmed that public financial awareness and quick identification of warning signs are crucial to preventing monetary loss and strengthening digital banking security in Nepal.
