SAGEA Unveils Helios AI: A Major Leap For Nepal’s Digital Identity and KYC Infrastructure
4th May 2026, Kathmandu
As digital financial services expand rapidly across Nepal, the surge in online fraud and identity theft has become a critical challenge.
From FinTech startups to established banking institutions, Know Your Customer (KYC) processes are now a mandatory regulatory requirement. However, existing methods are often the weakest link in the security chain.
SAGEA Unveils Helios AI
Addressing this vulnerability, Bhaktapur-based AI company SAGEA is developing Helios, an enterprise-grade KYC engine designed to modernize digital identity verification in Nepal.
The Problem: Sophisticated Fraud in a Growing Market
Nepal’s digital economy is booming mobile banking, digital wallets, and online lending are becoming the norm. Yet, this growth has invited sophisticated fraud tactics.
Traditional KYC systems, which often rely on simple photo matches or basic video calls, are struggling to keep up with:
Deepfakes: AI-generated faces that can mimic real human expressions.
Pre-recorded Video Abuse: Using stolen footage to bypass “live” checks.
Digital Document Forgery: Highly realistic alterations to citizenship and passport scans.
“Nepal’s digital economy is expanding at a lightning pace, but our identity verification infrastructure hasn’t kept up,” says Basab Jha, CEO of SAGEA. “Helios was built specifically to fill this gap.”
What is Helios?
Helios is a multi-service KYC verification engine that integrates several advanced security layers into a single workflow:
Biometric Authentication: High-precision facial recognition.
Video Analysis: Real-time processing for liveness detection.
Document Verification: Automated authenticity checks for national IDs.
High-Throughput Architecture: Capable of processing thousands of verifications simultaneously.
While traditional manual or semi-automated KYC processes can take 1 to 2 hours, SAGEA claims Helios can complete the entire verification cycle in under 15 seconds.
How It Works: The Multi-Layer Defense?
The system initiates with a short selfie video from the user. From there, it executes a rigorous verification funnel:
Risk Pre-screening: An initial layer that filters out obviously suspicious requests.
Active & Passive Liveness Detection:
Active: Prompts users to blink or turn their heads.
Passive: Analyzes subtle biological signals—such as skin texture and micro-movements—that AI and deepfakes cannot replicate.
OCR & Document Forgery Detection: Using Optical Character Recognition (OCR), the system extracts data from Nepali Citizenship, Passports, National IDs, and Driver’s Licenses. It then scans for digital alterations or forged textures.
Signal Fusion: The engine aggregates results from all layers to provide a final verdict: PASS, FAIL, or MANUAL REVIEW.
Prioritizing Data Sovereignty
A standout feature of Helios is its On-Premise Deployment capability. Most international KYC providers operate on a cloud-only model, meaning sensitive biometric data of Nepali citizens is often stored on foreign servers.
Helios allows banks and FinTechs to host the system on their own internal servers. This ensures:
Compliance: Meets strict Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) guidelines for data residency.
Security: Minimizes the risk of data leaks by keeping sensitive information within the country’s borders.
Flexibility: Supports private cloud or hybrid deployment models.
Built for the Nepali Context
Foreign KYC solutions often struggle with Nepali IDs and facial features because they are trained on international datasets. SAGEA has addressed this by training Helios on local datasets, ensuring high accuracy for:
Nepali Document Layouts: Recognizing the specific nuances of Nepali citizenship and license formats.
Localized Facial Features: Improved recognition accuracy for the diverse demographic of Nepal.
According to SAGEA, their OCR module achieves over 95% accuracy on printed Nepali documents, while deepfake detection currently stands at over 90% accuracy.
The Bottom Line
As the NRB increases regulatory pressure for robust Digital KYC (D-KYC), the need for a high-performance, indigenous solution has never been higher.
If Helios reaches full-scale production, it could serve as a cornerstone of Nepal’s financial tech infrastructure, proving that “Made in Nepal” software can compete with global standards in the high-stakes world of AI security.
