A security researcher discovered a novel Steganography Method for hiding up to three MB of data within a Portable Network Graphics (.PNG) image file posted on Twitter.
David Buchanan, a researcher, revealed his discovery on Twitter earlier this week, followed by a photo that read: “Save this image and change the extension to .zip!”
During the presentation, the researcher displayed MP3 audio files as well as the ZIP archives file contained inside. PNG image files hosted on Twitter.
Although the art of hiding data in photos (steganography) is not new. The fact that the images can be posted on a popular website like Twitter opens the door to malicious actors to exploit them such as hackers and scammers.
In his tweet, he also said that the source code is available in the ZIP/PNG file attached to the image. And he also shares his technique and methodology through a post on Github.
