People use hidden cameras for various reasons, some of which are legal, while others are not.

Hidden cameras in your home, hotel room, restrooms, and other places where you expect privacy are illegal and violate your rights. When it comes to hotels and Airbnb accommodations, owners try to justify the use of hidden cameras to prevent theft, property damage, and illegal use.

Is Using a Hidden Camera Legal?

Surveillance laws change by state and country, but the general principle remains the same. It is against the law to use a hidden camera anywhere there is an unreasonable expectation of privacy.’

The lawfulness of hidden surveillance is determined by its intent. Only on moral grounds is it legal to use hidden cameras. To install a hidden surveillance system, one must own the property or obtain a warrant. You must also ensure that you are not violating any other laws in the process.

Hidden cameras are illegal in hotel rooms, rental apartments, Airbnbs, and rental cars because these are places where you expect privacy. However, hosts may still place cameras in corridors, lobbies, or other public areas for security reasons as long as they notify you of their presence.
