TERAMOCS Scam Former NTA Chair
The court has convicted three top officials, including former NTA Chairman Digambar Jha, while acquitting former Communications Minister and Nepali Congress leader Mohan Bahadur Basnet.
Who Were Convicted?
A joint bench of Judges Hemanta Rawal, Dilli Ratna Shrestha, and Umesh Koirala found the following individuals guilty of irregularities in the procurement process:
-
Digambar Jha (Then Chairman, NTA)
-
Dhan Raj Gyawali (Then Member)
-
Tika Upreti (Then Member)
Sentencing and Penalties
The Special Court has sentenced all three convicted individuals to 6 months in prison, along with a fine of NPR 50,000 each.
The court noted that since the specific embezzlement amount (Bigo) could not be determined, only fines and jail time were imposed. However, former Chairman Digambar Jha faces an additional 6 months of imprisonment. The court prepared this opinion for additional sentencing, considering his position as the head of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).
Clean Chit for Congress Leader Mohan Bahadur Basnet
In a significant relief, former Communications Minister and Nepali Congress leader Mohan Bahadur Basnet has been acquitted in the same case. The Special Court found no legal grounds to convict him, granting him a clean chit.
This verdict marks a crucial turning point in the high-profile TERAMOCS corruption case that has dominated Nepalese headlines for months.
