TikTok, the popular social media platform, has officially initiated the process of registering and operating legally in Nepal. Two weeks ago, TikTok submitted all the necessary documents to the Ministry of Information and Communication to comply with Nepal’s regulations regarding social media platforms. This move aligns with Nepal’s efforts to regulate social media under the directives issued by the government.
TikTok Expands in Nepal

Registration Process and Documentation
According to the Ministry of Information and Communication, TikTok has been actively working to meet the conditions set by the government for official registration. TikTok had previously expressed its willingness to comply with Nepal’s regulations, and now, it has submitted the required documents to move the process forward. The ministry requested several documents, including TikTok’s proposal and details regarding tax obligations.
Gajendra Thakur, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Information and Communication, stated that TikTok had asked for time until November 4 to submit all necessary documents. However, TikTok provided the documents two weeks ahead of schedule. On Sunday, TikTok submitted around 200 pages of documentation. The Ministry will now review these documents before moving ahead with the registration process.
Nepal’s Conditions for TikTok
The Ministry had set several conditions for TikTok, including contributing to promoting Nepal’s tourism and supporting digital literacy initiatives. TikTok has agreed to fulfill these conditions, signaling its commitment to operating within Nepal’s regulatory framework.
Last year, the government of Nepal passed a directive requiring social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok to be officially registered. According to the directive, social media platforms were required to register within three months of receiving the notice. In line with this, TikTok has been working toward complying with the registration requirements.
Previous TikTok Ban and Opposition
In November 2023, Nepal had imposed a temporary ban on TikTok. The decision was met with opposition from political parties such as the Nepali Congress, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), as well as concerned individuals. These groups argued that TikTok was willing to operate according to Nepal’s rules, and the ban was unnecessary. Despite TikTok’s attempts to engage with the government, including sending two letters requesting the ban be lifted, the previous government maintained the restriction.
Lifting the Ban
After the formation of the new government, the TikTok ban was lifted on August 23, 2024. Following this, TikTok requested time to complete the official registration process. With the submission of the required documents, the Ministry of Information and Communication has indicated that the registration will proceed in the coming days after reviewing the materials.
