United Nations Launches 49.6 Million USD Flash Appeal for Nepal Flood Relief

The United Nations, in coordination with international humanitarian partner agencies, has launched a US$49.6 million emergency appeal to deliver life-saving relief, recovery, and rehabilitation assistance to more than 84,000 individuals affected by severe flooding and landslides along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers.

Governance and Coordination: The four-month emergency response plan operates under the institutional leadership of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) to address critical operational gaps in government-led operations.

Geographic Scope and Target Impact: Financial resources prioritize displaced and vulnerable populations across severely impacted districts, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading.

High-Altitude Focus: Interventions aim to secure basic living conditions and mitigate public health risks—specifically communicable and waterborne disease outbreaks—before severe winter weather affects high-altitude communities.

Sectoral Interventions and Operational Deployment

Cash Assistance and Financial Aid: Direct cash transfers will be distributed to affected families in areas where local commercial markets remain operational.

Shelter and Energy Supplies: Displaced households will receive cold-weather temporary shelter materials alongside portable solar equipment to provide immediate off-grid lighting and domestic power.

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH): Emergency operations include repairing damaged municipal water networks, installing rapid water purification systems, and distributing sanitation kits.

Healthcare and Protection: Mobile health units will deliver emergency medical treatment and nutritional support, while dedicated child protection teams will conduct family tracing and reunification.

Food Security and Livelihoods: The plan incorporates immediate emergency food distribution alongside targeted interventions to manage and preserve surviving livestock to safeguard agrarian livelihoods.
