The establishment of Sprout Technology has a different story. It has started with Mark Sears and Laurel who came to Nepal in 2008 for 2 weeks’ vacation. Which fortunately continued till 3 years later? They loved our country so much. After the initial tourist phase wore off he met with three Nepali web developers who were interested in learning “Ruby on Rails” stuff which he kept on bragging about. This surprisingly turned into morning training sessions around a kitchen table with just one iMac for the 4 of them. It can be marked as the beginning of something special. Mark’s ten years of technology startup experience in Canada and the US alongside Laurel’s experience as a Chartered Accountant were about to be put to a whole new test. Those interactive and practical sessions around that kitchen table were the early beginnings of Sprout’s intensive 6-week Rails development training. It led to their secret recipe for success, take amazingly talented people and give them the opportunity to learn, try and accomplish great things alongside other smart and passionate people.

At the same time, Tom & Alana Puskarich were on their own journey from the US to Nepal. Tom was a Sr. Solutions Engineer at Adobe Systems and Alana was a producer with National Geographic before taking the leap to move to Nepal and starting a transcription services company. In discovering whether their talents and experience could be used for building a social enterprise in Nepal, they met Mark and Laurel. Later on, they teamed up to drive Sprout Technology forward and haven’t looked back since.

The undeniable potential of people in Nepal and other developing nations is one of the biggest lessons learned in Sprout’s short history. It is also the driving force behind their CloudFactory distributed work platform where they are aiming to provide 1 million people with essential computer work over the next six years. When you strip away Rails, MongoDB, Coffeescript, iOS, Android and all the tech stuff they do at Sprout day in and day out, you’ll find a group of people that long to see change come to ourselves, our families, our communities, the nation of Nepal and the world. They want to be the world-changers, and their weapons of choices are computers and the mind blowing power of the Internet.

The services that they provide are as follows:

Web Development

They generally use Ruby on Rails to grow your ideas into web applications. The best way to know what it is like to build a web app with Sprout is to understand their influences in developing the “Sprout Way.” The first week of their training for new developers starts with a focus on Getting Real by 37signals. It is now six years old now but still very relevant, and a must-read for anyone working with them.

They love to work with Lean Startups. If you are an entrepreneur trying to do big things with a small budget, then you need to go out and read everything you can by Eric Ries. Then you can contact them to help make it happen. They will help you to make better, faster business decisions by using their agile approach to development that results in a tight loop of demos and feedback. Their software managers at Sprout are Certified Scrum Masters, and they live in a world of Basecamp, GitHub, Pivotal Tracker, Skype, and others to make it feel like they are around the corner from your office.

They want to help is in boiling our idea down to a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and then help you to build it. All these are easy to say but in real they have found it to be extremely hard in every case but they do their best and share the lessons that they learned from their other projects.

Sprout Technology is a unique partner only suitable for unique projects. Time and materials is the only way they engage because it ensures that they on the same team from the beginning. Fixed price web app projects are hardly ever successful because as soon as the magical number is chosen the client expands the scope and tries to get the most for that number while the development company tries to do the least amount possible for that number. They offer their products in a reliable amount.

Mobile Application Development

It is mostly a web app development company. But early on their web app clients, they started asking for a complimentary iPhone app for their web app. Then they asked for an Android version and sure, why not BlackBerry too. Their developers have loved the learning curve, and they likely are ready to pretty much build anything for you in the mobile space. And they not only make boring business apps, but they also have created and contributed to some cool games from one of the top mobile game companies in the world. Being a web company, they are incredibly excited about the mobile web and using HTML5 and JavaScript to do amazing things across mobile platforms.

Things are changing so quickly in this space that you need a partner to help you figure an overall plan. iOS covers the iPhone, iPad, and iPod which takes some figuring out and then when that is successful you will want an Android app. The building, testing and distributing mobile apps takes some figuring out, but they are here to guide you along the whole process. Mobile apps are often smaller projects that make a few weeks for one developer compared to their web app projects that take a few months for a team of three or more developers.

With their services from their employees, they also provide a working environment for their employees. With salary, they also have made provision of various facilities, such as:

  • Medical & Accidental Insurance
  • Provident/Retirement Fund
  • Transportation Allowance
  • Home Internet Allowance
  • Annual team-building trip
  • 5-day work week (2 day weekend)
  • Free Daily Lunches & Snacks
