Health Insurance Board Introduces Online Family Enrollment System
17th August 2026, Kathmandu
The Health Insurance Board has officially introduced an online facility allowing families to enroll in the National Health Insurance Program from the comfort of their homes.
Online Family Enrollment System
Citizens no longer need to visit local offices or wait in physical queues, as new family enrollments can now be processed entirely through a mobile phone or computer.
Preparation and Required Documents Before Online Registration
To ensure a smooth application process, applicants should assemble all necessary details and supporting documents prior to starting the online registration.
Essential Requirements and Information Needed
Active Mobile Number: Recommended to belong to the head of the family for receiving critical updates and SMS alerts.
Identification: National Identity Card number and date of birth for the family head, if available. A National Identity Card is not mandatory; manual entry is permitted if one is not held.
Family Details: Complete personal information for all members to be included in the policy.
Verification Documents: Relationship verification documents, official migration documents if the permanent address has changed, and targeted group identification certificates where applicable.
Step by Step Guide to Registering a New Family Online
Account Creation and Verification
Applicants begin by visiting the e-portal of the Health Insurance Board to create an account. Enter the name, mobile number, and email address of the head of the family. A six-digit OTP will be sent via HIB Alert to verify the mobile number, after which the user sets a secure password.
Enrollment Form Submission
Navigate to the Mero Bimaleakh section and select New Enrollment. Read and accept the electronic consent form. Input the head of the family details automatically via the National Identity Card number or manually enter the required information.
Adding Family Members
Enter details for remaining family members and specify their relationship to the head of the family, attaching supporting documents. A single family account can accommodate up to ten members including the head of the family.
Discounts and Benefits for Targeted Groups
Families containing members from specific target categories can assign that individual as the head of the family to receive contribution discounts. Targeted categories include:
- Extremely poor families holding a red card
- Persons living with complete disabilities
- People living with HIV or MDR-TB
- People affected by leprosy
- Senior citizens aged 70 years or above
- Female Community Health Volunteers
Valid official identification documents proving eligibility must be uploaded to receive targeted group benefits.
Payment Verification and Card Issuance
Once all details are verified, the system automatically calculates the required health insurance contribution fee. The applicant completes the payment through available digital payment gateways. Upon successful payment, the application is automatically forwarded to the Health Insurance Office in the permanent district of the family head for final verification.
Applicants can download a PDF copy of their insurance document for record-keeping. The system provides real-time status updates via an in-system notification icon, and an official SMS notification is dispatched to the registered mobile number once the health insurance card is issued.
