A two-day workshop on optimizing IT networks in Nepal’s campuses offering higher education was successfully concluded, and organized by Nepal Research and Education Network (NREN).
Campus Network Design Workshop
The event, held at the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) in Khumaltar, saw the participation of 35 representatives from 27 institutions across the country.
Inauguration and Objectives
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Ravindra Prasad Dhakal, Secretary of NAST, who highlighted the importance of robust campus networks for fostering innovation and effective learning environments. During the opening ceremony, NREN Chairperson Lochan Lal Amatya welcomed the participants and emphasized the need to design campus networks that maximize benefits for both students and educators. He encouraged the trainees to acquire skills that would enable them to enhance their institutions’ networks effectively.
Support and Participants
The event was supported by the National Information and Knowledge Centre under the Science and Technology Information System Center at NAST. The workshop brought together campus network designers from universities and colleges specializing in IT education, alongside experts from NREN and Subisu.
Outcomes and Insights
The participants expressed that the workshop gave them essential skills to make their campus networks more efficient and improve coordination with external networks, such as ISPs. The knowledge gained will help them design more reliable and faster campus networks, ensuring seamless connectivity for academic and research purposes.
NREN, a nonprofit organization dedicated to research, offers free high-speed Wi-Fi services under the Eduroam initiative to universities and research centers in Nepal. The workshop further strengthened NREN’s mission by empowering IT professionals to build and manage effective campus networks.
Voluntary Contributions
All trainers and staff involved in the workshop provided their services voluntarily, reflecting their commitment to advancing Nepal’s education and research infrastructure.
This workshop exemplifies a step forward in modernizing campus networks in Nepal, ultimately benefiting students, educators, and the broader academic community.
