Some day you wake up extra cheerful and be down after a while. You may be irritated and get offended easily. Then feel low the whole day. Someday you are very sensitive and cry for no reason. Someday you just want to eat all day and do nothing. It is a natural process, you don’t need to worry about it or think that you are the only one going through it.

If there is an abrupt and dramatic change in emotion for no reason, it is called mood swing. Everybody has mood swings. And there are different causes for it. Many factors can contribute to these shifts in mood and attitude.  Women experience mood swings before and during menstruation. Researchers believe that almost 90% of women experience it.  The causes of mood swings are unclear. Researchers believe that the sudden change in the level of hormones in women which also causes menstruation causes it. Women go through some of these emotions

Mood swings come under Premenstrual syndrome(PMS). PMS is a very common condition. Women go through some of these emotions during PMS.

  • Irritability
  • Anger
  • Depression
  • Crying
  • Oversensitivity
  • Feeling nervous and anxious
  • Alternating sadness and rage
  • Extra cheerful
  • Carbohydrate cravings

Changes in mood can happen from time to time. Whether it’s because of a period or due to increased stress from work. However, you should find healthy ways to cope with them.

Exercise

People who exercise are healthy. In this instance, light exercises during and before your periods are good for health. You can try aerobic exercises, jogging, swimming, walking, jumping. Yoga and meditation are good for health.

Small frequent meals

Rather than standard three meals a day, you should take small meals. Include calcium and magnesium-rich food in your diet 1 or 2 weeks before your periods. These can help ease mood changes. You should avoid junk foods and refined sugar and sweets. This will help control the blood sugar levels in your body.

Avoid caffeine, alcohol

Reduce caffeine, stop smoking and alcohol intake before menses. Caffeine can increase anxiety, nervousness, and insomnia. Alcohol acts as depressants. Avoiding it can help you be cheery.

Get better sleep

A healthy routine of sleep is necessary for everyone. And during this period of time, a woman should take proper sleep. It not only makes you relax but also makes you refreshed and energetic for the next day. Many negative thoughts can occur due to a dull mind, to prevent this adequate amount of sleep is a must.

Sometimes your mood swings can be very severe. If they interfere in your daily life, then it is better to consult your doctor.
