Nabil Free Burn Treatment Camp in Birgunj Provides Consultation and Treatment to 150 Patients
7th May 2026, Kathmandu
Access to specialized medical care remains a significant challenge in many parts of Nepal, particularly for complex conditions like burn injuries. To address this gap, the Nabil Free Burn Treatment camp was recently organized at Narayani Hospital in Birgunj.
Nabil Free Burn Treatment
This humanitarian initiative, a joint effort between Narayani Hospital and Nabil Bank with technical support from Fect Nepal, provided essential medical services to 150 patients who otherwise faced geographical and financial barriers to recovery.
The camp, which ran from Baisakh 17 to 20, served as a beacon of hope for many individuals living with long-term complications from burn injuries, offering them a chance at a more functional and dignified life.
Successful Surgeries and Specialized Care
One of the most critical components of the Birgunj camp was the provision of surgical interventions. Out of the 150 patients who attended for consultation, 46 burn victims underwent specialized surgeries performed by senior plastic surgeons and specialists. These procedures were aimed at correcting disabilities and complications arising from past burns, such as contractures that limit mobility.
For cases that were too complex to be handled on-site, Nabil Bank and the medical team ensured a continuum of care. Six patients with highly critical conditions were referred to the specialized Kirtipur-based hospital in Kathmandu for advanced treatment, with specialists from Kirtipur Hospital facilitating the transition.
Province-Wide Screening and Identifying Victims
The success of the treatment camp was built upon a massive pre-screening effort conducted across Madhesh Province. Before the main event in Birgunj, medical teams from Fect Nepal organized screening camps across 27 local levels in six different districts.
This proactive outreach allowed teams to collect preliminary data directly from local communities, identifying burn victims in remote areas who were in dire need of intervention. By prioritizing those with urgent needs, the Nabil Free Burn Treatment initiative ensured that the most vulnerable patients were the first to receive care at Narayani Hospital.
Nabil Bank’s CSR Vision: Bridging the Healthcare Gap
Nabil Bank has long been a leader in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Nepal. CEO Manoj Kumar Gnyawali emphasized that the bank’s goal is to reach underserved communities where specialized healthcare is often non-existent. He noted that many burn victims in Nepal live with untreated injuries for years because they cannot afford the travel to Kathmandu or the cost of private surgery.
The bank’s commitment to healthcare is not limited to Madhesh Province. Similar initiatives have already made an impact in other regions:
- Sudurpaschim Province: 65 patients were treated in Dhangadhi.
- Karnali Province: 194 patients received consultations and treatments during a dedicated camp.
- Lumbini Province: Future camps are already scheduled for Baisakh 25 to 28.
Training and Capacity Building at Narayani Hospital
The camp was led by renowned experts, including senior plastic surgeon Dr. Shankar Man Rai from Kirtipur Hospital. Beyond immediate treatment, Dr. Rai highlighted that a secondary goal of the camp was to strengthen the capacity of Narayani Hospital’s local medical staff.
By working alongside world-class specialists, the local team gained valuable insights into burn care management. The long-term objective is to empower regional hospitals like Narayani to manage specialized burn treatments independently, reducing the need for patients to travel to the capital for every procedure.
Restoring Lives and Dignity
Dr. Chitranjan Shah, the Acting Medical Superintendent of Narayani Hospital, shared moving accounts of patients who had regained their functional abilities after years of living with disabilities. For many, these surgeries meant more than just physical healing; they meant the ability to return to work, attend school, and participate in social life without discomfort or social stigma.
Conclusion
The Nabil Free Burn Treatment camp in Birgunj is more than just a medical event; it is a life-changing intervention for 150 individuals in Madhesh Province. Through Nabil Bank’s financial support and the technical expertise of Fect Nepal and Kirtipur Hospital, the initiative is successfully democratizing access to plastic and reconstructive surgery in Nepal. As Nabil Bank expands these camps to other provinces, it continues to set a high standard for how financial institutions can drive positive, sustainable social change through healthcare.
