First Chhori Panchayat

The girls’ voice is raised from the first Chhori Panchayat held in Nepal. Girls demanded social, economic and political rights, Kathmandu.

Today the first National historic Chhori Panchayat is held in Bohre village of Kavrerplanchok, Nepal. Sunil Jaglan, who raised the voice of women’s rights from India, organized the Chhori Panchayat in a very interesting way to start the fight for girls’ rights in Nepal, in which apart from school girls, women from nearby villages also participated.

In this, the President of Chhori Panchayat was first elected, in which Rama Karki was selected by random choice. After this, the Nepalese cap, which has been a symbol of culture and patriarchy, was worn to Rama so that there could be gender equality in the culture and under her chairmanship, the Chhori Panchayat was held in which the girls openly expressed their views by taking permission from the President.

Sunil Jaglan played the role of Rama’s Secretary in the program.

Sabina Regmi said that girls should be given equal social rights now but how to expect when the family members do not give them equal food to the boys.

Sangeeta Shrestha said that a girl has to struggle from being born. Now the government should understand that Chhori Panchayat’s voice should consciously protect our rights.

Diya Detal said that in our country, men like Sunil Jaglan of India should play a crucial role in fighting for girls’ rights.

Maya Muktan said that we have not even got the rights of our property to date.

At the end of the Panchayat, a joint resolution was taken that those who marry girls before 20 should be punished with 3 years imprisonment with a fine of Rs 5 lakh. Along with this, there should be a provision of fines and a punishment for the people involved in it. Also, girls should be given equal social, economic and political rights.

It is worth mentioning that the convener of Chhori Panchayat, Sunil Jaglan, has been praised by the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi and the ex-President Shri Pranab Mukherjee many times in their address at national and international levels. International organizations have considered his campaign as the basis for positive change in India for girl empowerment.

The selfie with Daughter campaign was launched in Nepal on 9th June 2021. Many liked this campaign very much, and its video on TikTok was liked by 170 million. Three best selfies with their daughters were given a prize of Rs. 21000, 11000 and 5100 respectively. In this program, then Union Minister of Women, Child and Senior Citizen of Nepal, Julie Kumari Mahato, and the Cabinet Minister of India Rao Inderjit Singh inaugurated and participated in the campaign, which was highly appreciated in the media.

Sunil Jaglan, an initiator of Chhori Panchayat, said that we are trying to increase awareness of girls’ rights in Nepal and make men realize that they should give up the evil practice of snatching their rights.

Besides Ram Devi Tamang, Deputy Mayor of Namo Buddha Municipality, Sunil Nanda, Rabi Raj Thapa, senior Selfie with Daughter Foundation, Bikram Shrestha founder of Internet Foundation of Nepal, Kalpana Shrestha, and Santosh Coordinators of Selfie With Daughter Foundation participated in Chhori Panchayat.
