Tech Giant Microsoft has decided to end its 20 years old Open License Program starting from January 1, 2022. However, you can continue purchasing and renewing new software licenses and other online services until December 31, 2021. After January 1 of 2022, the New License-only purchases should be transacted through partners in the Cloud Solution Provider program.

What is Microsoft Open License Programme?
Microsoft started this program 20 years ago to help the small and mid-sized customers/organizations to purchase Software Licenses at a volume price. Although this initiative has proved to be very useful for the customers, the company has decided to end it considering various factors.
Along with the announcement of the end, considering the need of the changing time, Microsoft has introduced the same but better service through the Microsoft New commerce experience. Microsoft assures that this will simplify the license purchasing procedure by introducing the perpetual software license purchases through the new commerce experience. The Microsoft New Commerce Experience falls under the Cloud Service Provider programs for the partners.
With this, the customers will benefit in the following ways:
- Firstly, it offers a simplified approach and greater flexibility to the customers.
- Similarly, it is easy to understand
- Moreover, the Predictable costs make it more customer-friendly.
Similarly, let’s look at some important points from the announcement :
“With the changes, we’re making to the Open License program and the expansion of offers through the new commerce experience, you’ll get a consistent and simplified purchase experience to help you digitally transform your organization at your pace, with greater flexibility in how and where you buy. Talk with your partner about which option is best for your organization.”
According to Microsoft, the current announcements are applicable to commercial agreements only. The company will make further announcements in the future for other agreement types.
