As part of this humanitarian and educational initiative, Nepal Medicity provided entirely free surgical treatments to 8 underprivileged patients suffering from complex foot and ankle deformities.
Bridging the Gap in Complex Orthopedic Care
The intensive four-day international program took place at Nepal Medicity Hospital from June 3 to June 6, 2026 (Jeth 20–23, 2026). The event focused on addressing complex foot and ankle deformities, fostering global knowledge exchange, and upgrading the surgical skills of local orthopedists.
The successful execution of the course was led by Nepal Medicity’s Orthopedic Department, spearheaded and coordinated by Dr. Daman Jha, Foot and Ankle Specialist at Medicity.
About Steps2Walk: Steps2Walk is a globally renowned non-profit organization dedicated to treating severe foot and ankle deformities in underserved communities worldwide. The organization provides free surgical care and rehabilitation while actively training local healthcare providers to establish long-term medical self-sufficiency.
A Platform for Continuous Learning and Knowledge Sharing
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Upendra Mahato, Chairman of Nepal Medicity, stated that the hospital has evolved beyond a treatment center into a hub for continuous learning and professional development.
“True progress in healthcare is achieved not just through infrastructure and technology, but through knowledge sharing, collaboration, and building a skilled workforce,” Dr. Mahato remarked. He expressed deep gratitude to the international faculty for sharing their expertise, noting that the initiative will have a lasting impact on Nepal’s orthopedic capabilities.
Dr. Mark Myerson, Founder and President of Steps2Walk, welcomed the participants and reiterated the organization’s core mission: improving patient care globally through targeted training, hands-on collaboration, and humanitarian service.
Global Expertise Meets Local Surgeons
The program brought world-renowned foot and ankle specialists to Kathmandu, including:
-
Dr. Cristian Ortiz (Chile)
-
Dr. Rajesh Simon (India)
-
Dr. Manuel Sousa (Portugal)
-
Dr. Naren Gurbani (USA)
The course also drew international trainees and orthopedic surgeons from various hospitals across Nepal, all eager to specialize in foot and ankle care.
Inside the 4-Day Course Structure
The comprehensive curriculum combined academic rigor with life-saving surgeries:
Day 1: Scientific sessions and academic presentations.
Day 2: Detailed patient examinations, medical history reviews, and surgical planning.
Days 3 & 4: Live, hands-on deformity correction surgeries.
Free World-Class Surgeries for Patients of All Ages
Reflecting on the event, Foot and Ankle Surgeon Dr. Daman Jha emphasized the long-term benefits of the program.
“This is the first time a specialized course of this scale has been organized in Nepal,” Dr. Jha said. “Through the live operating sessions, our young surgeons gained invaluable, direct experience from global pioneers. Most importantly, we were able to perform free, life-changing surgeries for 8 patients ranging from young children to the elderly.”
Dr. Jha added that such initiatives are vital for developing high-level, localized foot and ankle care in Nepal, ensuring that complex cases can be treated successfully within the country in the future.
